About Us

About Us

Backwoods Safari was started by two experienced guides, who are also avid travelers. We hope to share our knowledge and expertise to make your safari successful. We will use our experience to make sure that every detail is taken care of and your trip to Tanzania is a dream come true.

We are also very passionate about conservation and do everything possible to reduce our impact on the planet and the beautiful National Parks of East Africa. We book only ecologically friendly lodges and camping sites on safari and ensure we pack out or dispose of properly any waste created.

Thomas Joseph has a Bachelor Degree in Wildlife Management from the College of African Wildlife in Mweka. He has over 10 years of experience guiding clients up Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and through the vast National Parks of Tanzania. He has summited Kilimanjaro hundreds of times and rafted through the Grand Canyon in the United States. He is passionate about conservation and loves to explore new places.

Melinda Wulf has over 10 years of experience in advertising and event marketing coupled with eight years of experience living and working in Tanzania in the non-profit sector. She has summited Kilimanjaro four times and trekked to Everest Base Camp and completed the Everest Base Camp Marathon. She is passionate about travel and loves to take photographs of wildlife.

Ethical Safari and Trekking

We believe the tourism industry has an obligation and a great opportunity to protect the world’s natural habitats, cultural heritage sites and communities. We actively promote environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Every climb is audited to ensure guides and crew are provided proper salaries, tips, food, equipment and sleeping conditions.
